An ancient myth, known to all Finno-Ugric peoples, tells of a time when only a boundless ocean of chaos existed. A Creator Bird (variously interpreted as a duck, goose, eagle, or swallow) flew overhead, searching for a nest. When she laid an egg, it fell and disappeared into the depths of the ocean of chaos. According to the myth, the Creator Bird was supposed to dive into the ocean of chaos to create the world from the egg.
